Common Questions

  • What’s the difference between a File Tracker and a Link Monitor? A File Tracker hosts your file (PDF, image, etc.) at a unique Pingbird URL and logs every download. A Link Monitor creates a tracked redirect — anyone who visits your Pingbird link is forwarded to your target URL, and the click is recorded. Both give you the same analytics data.
  • How do custom tracking fields work? When creating a monitor you can define named fields (e.g., source, campaign). Add them as query parameters to your public URL — e.g., ?source=twitter — and Pingbird captures that value alongside every request. They appear as tags in your Request Log so you can see exactly which campaign, email, or channel drove each access.
  • What is a monitor credit? Each active monitor consumes one credit. Your plan includes a base credit allowance (1 on Free, up to 25 on Enterprise), and you can purchase additional credits individually from the dashboard at $2.50/month each. Deleting a monitor immediately returns its credit to your pool.

Getting Started

  1. Create your first monitor: Click “New Monitor” in the nav. Choose File Tracker to host a file or Link Monitor to track a redirect. Pick a unique Monitor ID — this becomes your public Pingbird URL — and optionally define custom tracking fields, then hit Create.
  2. Share your public URL: Copy your monitor’s Pingbird URL from the dashboard and distribute it however you like (emails, docs, social posts). Append custom field query params — e.g., ?source=newsletter — to any version of the link to tag traffic by origin.
  3. Explore your analytics: Open any monitor to see its Activity Timeline, country heatmap, and paginated Request Log. The log shows each visitor’s timestamp, location, referrer, user agent, and any captured custom field values.
